The Fire-Safe Business Recognition Program is a voluntary recognition initiative of the South Adams County Fire Department (SACFD) created exclusively for local businesses that have demonstrated full compliance with the fire code. Through this program, the Department formally acknowledges the commercial property owners and operators who pass their fire safety inspection with no outstanding violations — turning a routine regulatory requirement into a mark of distinction the business can proudly display.

 Statement of Need: Why This Program Matters

Commercial fires impose a heavy and largely preventable cost on any community. National fire data consistently shows that structure fires in business occupancies cause substantial property loss each year, much of it traceable to conditions the fire code is specifically designed to prevent — blocked or locked exits, inoperable fire protection equipment, improper storage of combustibles, and unaddressed electrical hazards. When a business stays in full compliance with the code, it protects not only its own employees, customers, and premises, but also the neighboring properties and the firefighters who would otherwise be called to respond.

Fire code inspection has traditionally been framed in terms of enforcement: the Department identifies violations, issues correction notices, and re-inspects until compliance is achieved. That process is essential, but it casts the inspection as something done to a business rather than with it. Many business owners invest significant effort to maintain their fire protection systems and keep their properties safe year-round, and that effort currently goes unrecognized.

Criteria for Recognition

Recognition under this program is reserved for businesses that have demonstrably met the fire code. It is earned through the Department’s existing inspection process — not through self-reporting — so that the recognition reflects a verified standard of safety. A business qualifies as a recognized Fire-Safe Business when it satisfies all of the following criteria:

Eligibility Requirements

•     Current fire code inspection. The business has completed its scheduled SACFD fire safety inspection within the applicable inspection cycle.

•     No outstanding violations. The business has passed that inspection with zero outstanding fire code violations — either because none were found, or because all identified violations were corrected and cleared on re-inspection.

•     Required systems and permits in good standing. All applicable fire protection systems (such as alarms, sprinklers, and extinguishers) are properly installed, inspected, and maintained, and all required operational permits are current.

•     Good standing with the Department. The business has no unresolved enforcement actions, unpaid re-inspection fees, or pending orders to comply.

How a Business Qualifies:  No separate application or fee is required to be considered. When a business passes its regular fire code inspection with no outstanding violations, it automatically meets the standard for recognition, and the Department extends recognition as part of closing out the inspection. Businesses that initially receive correction notices remain fully eligible: once they correct the cited items and pass re-inspection, they qualify for recognition on the same terms as a business that passed on the first visit. In this way the program rewards the end result — a code-compliant business — and encourages every business to reach it.
